On the 31st of July this year I will be celebrating my 30 year anniversary of qualifying as a Financial Adviser.
During this time I’ve met literally hundred of clients living with HIV – many of which have had poor experiences elsewhere – this may have been though their Bank, Building Society, Estate Agent, Mortgage Broker, Insurance Company or an Online Money Website.
Advising HIV Positive clients is something that I do literally “Week in and Week out”, “Day In and Day Out” – making sure they are able to obtain the Income Protection and Critical Illness they need to protect their income and mortgages.
It’s important that you take specialist professional advice because many of the “Insurance Distribution” routes mentioned are not totally friendly to people living with HIV and may lead you to a disappointing outcome.
Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks are specialists at advising HIV Positive applicants for Income Protection & Critical Illness Cover, in this new extended series of “Disclosures & Confidentiality” articles I will be sharing “real life case examples” with you that have crossed my desk recently.
The subjects we will cover in the coming weeks are very real and will help you to protect your Confidentiality and determine the necessary disclosures that will need to be made to insurers for you to obtain Life Insurance & Critical Illness Cover.
This is my specialist area of financial services and I look forward to sharing more with you over the coming weeks
Income Protection vs Critical Illness Cover
Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover are two of the main product areas I can assist people living with HIV.
I’m able to assist those with HIV who are looking to protect their regular income in case of long term illness. Some insurers are now considering applications from clients with HIV for both Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover – we can help you to compare the product features, availability and premiums for all types of long term illness cover – we are specialists in advising people living with HIV.
HIV Income Protection – Case Example
Name: Saka: Occupation: Chief Executive Age: 40
I recently advised a new client Saka , who had been “sold” an Income Protection policy through a Mortgage Broker three years ago, they had failed to mention that the policy had a specific “exclusion” clause for HIV. The policy that was arranged had a monthly premium of £90 per month but it did not cover him for any HIV related claims.
There are in fact now Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover policies that are HIV inclusive and great care should be taken when selecting these types of policy. Somewhere along the line with Saka’s existing policy the medical disclosures were not made correctly on his application, if they had the policy wouldn’t have been originally issued.
In my discussions with Saka he asked me to find something affordable that did not exclude HIV in the terms and conditions to replace his existing policy.
I’m left asking the question why would you take the chance of taking a policy that excludes HIV? You should always take specialist financial advice. to avoid having incorrect insurance cover.

HIV Life Insurance – Declined Elsewhere
I meet clients all the time that have poor experiences elsewhere either with their Bank, Building Society, Estate Agent, Mainstream Financial Adviser, Mortgage Broker or Online Comparison Websites.
In our experience all of these just don’t know enough about HIV – this can often can result in poor underwriting outcomes.
Up to 90% of Insurance Companies decline Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover for HIV Positive. I’m not sure why anyone would apply for Life Insurance without taking specialist financial advice?
Product Features
We are able to arrange Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover products that are fully inclusive for pre-existing conditions.
We are now also offering longer term life insurance for clients up to 30 year term and for some longer – many people only have 10, 15 or 20 years remaining on their policies and we are currently extending policies for many people with shorter term cover.
