“25 in 2025 – The D Word – HIV Income Protection”? By Chris Morgan
This is my 25th year in 2025 offering financial advice to people with HIV and I’ve met lots of people in that time who have felt discrimination at the hands of the insurance industry. You will read in my previous columns that over the last 25 years I’m the financial adviser that decided to do something to help people living with HIV and fight against Discrimination.
After 25 years, I’m still Determined as ever to help people avoid and overcome Declined Income Protection applications. Not all Insurance Companies are the same, some are open minded with regards to HIV and some others are still not – let me help you find the companies that are HIV Friendly.
For some people applying for Income Protection can turn into a complicated undertaking, with underwriting criteria currently proving difficult for people living with HIV. Applications that are declined for no apparent reason can leave customers feeling frustrated and Discriminated against.
“95% of Banks, Building Societies, Estate Agents and Mortgage Providers decline people living with HIV Income Protection” …
IPP v CIC
There are a number of differences between Income Protection (IPP) and Critical Illness (CIC) – it is in fact like comparing apples with bananas in regards to product features. For example, Income Protection is designed to pay a monthly benefit should you be unable to work due to illness. Critical Illness Cover pays a lump sum benefit should you diagnosed as having a specified serious illness.
Declined Elsewhere
We meet many people who have been declined for Income Protection elsewhere, normally whilst taking a mortgage through their Bank, Building Society, Estate Agent or Mortgage provider. We meet people in these circumstances on a regular basis and never presume what has happened elsewhere previously is correct.
Product Features
You should be very careful to make sure that any Income Protection policy or Critical Illness Cover that you are offered does not have any exclusions for HIV. This is something we have been campaigning for for 15 years and we only offer HIV “Inclusive” IPP and CIC – we always believed this was possible and now these products are available through Unusual Risks.
