“The unseen impact of declining people for Life Insurance” … Commentary by Chris Morgan

One of the most concerning parts of working with clients who are living with HIV, is the impact on their health, when Life Insurance Companies decline them for Life Insurance. Currently within the insurance industry at least 56% of HIV Life Insurance applications are being declined by Life Insurers, many of these decisions are for no apparent reason.

Yesterday, I met a lady who had been turned down by two Life Insurance companies in a row, without any reasonable explanation. She was extremely stressed by the whole situation and had been left with worries and uncertainties around her forthcoming property purchase.

We are aware that the majority of high street banks and financial institutions are declining people for Life Insurance who are living with HIV. Throughout the pandemic we have been speaking to people who have been adversely effected by these decisions every day.

We have spent a lot of time during the pandemic speaking to Life Insurers and Re-insurers, with a view to protecting the interests of the HIV Community and making sure we are `able to offer ” Life Insurance For All”. `Unusual Risks are able to guarantee access to some form of Life Insurance for anyone aged between 18-64, it doesn’t matter if you were declined elsewhere.

Client Case Example, Rachel, Aged 43, Support Worker

Rachel approached us after her bank declined her Life Insurance application, without giving any reasonable explanation. The fact this was application was linked to her new mortgage, caused her a considerable amount of `worry and stress as the completion on her new mortgage and home was only a few weeks away.

We were able to find her Life Insurance cover that was half of the premium the bank had quoted her and with an insurer that was open minded about some of the minor “other” medical conditions on her medical file, which meant she had the re-assurance that her Life Insurance was fully inclusive of her medical situation.

Declined For Cover? We can help !

Throughout the pandemic, we have been more determined than ever to make sure that everyone is able to access some form of Life Insurance. We believe it is as a basic human right for people, to protect their mortgages, debts and families.

We have encountered many people who have been adversely affected by the decisions of Life Insurance companies. We believe more than ever in “Life Insurance for All” and are able to guarantee access to some form of Life Insurance for everyone aged between 18-64.
