HIV & Insurance Column – Edition 6 – November 2020

“The Generation Game” – Part 6 – “Life Cover For All! Regardless of Occupation” Commentary By Chris Morgan

It’s very apparent that, even though high street banks are not able to offer Life Insurance to people with HIV at this moment in time, there are still a number options available that are allowing us to arrange Life Insurance cover for people living with HIV.

Third Generation

Unusual Risks have worked hard throughout the COVID 19 pandemic to make sure the rights and interests of people living with HIV are protected within the Insurance industry. We have made certain that products that were launched by new providers in the last year remain available and are offered at fair and affordable premiums.

We have relationships with all of the “Household Name” insurers that are offering the best premiums for people living with HIV. During our research earlier in the year we established that the number of providers offering Life Insurance had fallen dramatically. The initial impact of COVID-19 meant that only 13% of insurers were offering cover – O% of high street banks.

Client Case Example, Veronica, Hospital Secretary, Aged 41

Veronica approached us after being declined by her bank for Life Insurance earlier in the year. This had been a stressful and difficult situation. She was concerned that her job role at the hospital had prevented her from getting Life Insurance – we were able to assure her otherwise and arranged cover for her with a leading company at a reasonable premium.

Since the start of the pandemic we have found that, this has not been an uncommon situation, as we already look after lots of people who work in the health service or in frontline positions. This was an issue we were very quick to address with all of our insurers, as we were aware they are not allowed to use a persons occupation as an indication of risk for the underwriting of Life Insurance.

Declined For Cover? We Can Help

Throughout the pandemic, we have been more determined than ever to make certain that everyone is able to access some form of Life Insurance, as a basic human right, to protect their mortgages, debts and families. Keep checking back my new HIV and Insurance column for further details of our  “Life Insurance For All!” campaign.
