Why people with HIV shouldn’t give up trying to finding Life Insurance? By Chris Morgan
Over the last fourteen years there have been many people living with HIV who have been declined for Life Insurance by UK insurance companies – many of which where given no reasonable explanation for being turned away and were left feeling stressed and anxious over their application.
The good news is the policies that are now available are way more accessible than previous versions issued between 2009 and 2022 – with changes that came to market in late 2022 there are now many more opportunities for people living with HIV than there were before.
Medical Conditions
When products were first launched in 2009 the policies available were very restrictive, especially for those with other medical conditions alongside their HIV. Insurers were particularly strict around applications where there other other significant medical conditions such as Hepatitis or Diabetes.
Points System
Life Insurance Companies adopt a medical ratings system, where effectively points accumulate that directly effect the price that an applicant pays for their insurance. These ratings vary hugely between companies from +25% through to +600%, dependent on the severity of the medical conditions.
Underwriting Criteria
Underwriting criteria has changed considerably over the last year with companies now willing to consider a wider range of medical conditions alongside HIV. This has meant many clients that have been declined for cover in the past are now eligible for life insurance – which of course is very welcome.
Medical Conditions
Some of the main multiple medical conditions we are able to cover are HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Diabetes Type 1, Diabetes Type 2, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Stress, Anxiety, Depression along with many other different conditions.
We recommend that people living with HIV review their Life Insurance arrangements to make sure they have the best deal for their circumstances.
