HIV & Insurance Column – Edition 16 – February 2022

HIV Life Insurance – How do you know that your medical file has been treated fairly when taking Life Insurance – Part 1 ” … Commentary by Chris Morgan

Another thing that is certain is that HIV, although it is a manageable condition, still attracts significant stigma and discrimination like no other medical condition. This is the main reason that 56% of applications during the pandemic were declined by Life Insurance Companies without any reasonable explanation.

We also know that since the main pandemic, many banks and Life Insurance Companies have been charging double the best available premiums for covering people with HIV. People who have had additional conditions like Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, Syphilis, Stress, Anxiety and Depression have been declined outright.

Throughout lockdown we were so concerned at the way Banks and Building Societies and some Life Insurers were treating people living with HIV, we used the time wisely to negotiate with new Life Insurance Companies over additional medical conditions. We will be announcing the results of that work in the next few weeks – these products are only available through brokers and not high street banks and insurers directly.

We are however able to say for the moment ….

“If you are have been declined recently by an insurer and there is no reasonable explanation contact Unusual Risks to review the situation. If you were applying through any high street bank, building society or direct Life Insurers – then we have successfully obtained cover for people who were declined for cover throughout the pandemic”.

Even if you were declined for cover by an insurer in the past this does not mean that your are uninsurable forever.

Declined For Cover? We can help !

Throughout the pandemic, we have been more determined than ever to make sure that everyone is able to access some form of Life Insurance. We believe it is as a basic human right for people, to protect their mortgages, debts and families.

We have encountered many people who have been adversely affected by the decisions of Life Insurance companies. We believe more than ever in “Life Insurance for All” and are able to guarantee access to some form of Life Insurance for everyone aged between 18-64.
