HIV & Insurance Column – Edition 7 – December 2020

“The Generation Game” – Part 7 – “How do you know you are getting the best Life Insurance deal?” By Chris Morgan

I’ve previously mentioned in my column that Life Insurance is more of a “considered purchased and less of an impulse purchase.” This has become more so as premiums for HIV Life Insurance have reduced over time, due to the availability of research associated with medications.

For existing policy holders its difficult to know if you have the most up to date premium and for new applicants it’s difficult to find the lowest premium, amongst all the Life Insurance products and providers available. It’s even more difficult to know which insurers offer cover to people living with HIV – before you initiate a formal application form.

Third Generation

Those applying for the “Third Generation” of products have access to the lowest premium and best sums assured, since the launch of HIV Life Insurance products in 2009. Not all insurers offer cover and you will save yourself a huge amount of time by approaching a specialist financial Adviser.

They can access all of the household names you will know, but also a number of products that are only available to consumers via financial advisers. HIV Life Insurance is unavailable through money websites and high street banks and your application will be declined at point of sale when applying via these methods.

Client Case Example, Malek, Ages 42, Customer Service Agent

Malek approached us recently to check his existing policy that he arranged directly through a major Life Insurer in 2015. When we checked his policy he was paying £28.07 premium for £50,000 of cover, which appeared to be quite reasonable.

However, after some initial research we were able to find him a policy for £23.04 but doubled the sum assured to £100,000. This difference was because he had taken his original policy over four years ago and the premiums and the way HIV Life Insurance is underwritten have since changed.

Declined For Cover? We Can Help

Only 13% of Life Insurers, Banks and Building Societies in the UK currently offer Life Assurance for people with HIV. This figure becomes 0% of High Street Banks when isolated from Insurers. We are constantly reviewing and researching the market for HIV Life Insurance.

Throughout the pandemic, we have been determined more than ever to make certain that everyone is able to access some form of Life Insurance, as a basic human right. They should be able to protect their mortgages, debts and families. Keep checking back to my new HIV and Insurance column for further details of our  “Life Insurance For All!” campaign.
