HIV & Insurance Column – Edition 2 – August 2020

“The Generation Game” – Part 2 – “Social Responsibility Within The Life Insurance Industry” Commentary By Chris Morgan

As HIV life Insurance has evolved over the last 11 years there have been a number of advice issues that have been presented to both financial advisers and Life Insurance Companies. The most pressing issue at this moment is the number of People Living with HIV that are being rejected for cover.

The first generations of Life Insurance policies that were available from 2009 onwards were only available to a select few people, which caused confusion in the market and a perception that Life Insurance was difficult to get for people with HIV.

Life Insurance For All !

The ideal that Life Insurance should be available to all is not such a strange idea. As a social insurance system has been practised in some European countries for decades, where everyone is entitled to a certain level of Life Insurance, without any medical evidence – it is considered a human right !

It was myself that suggested to the UK Life Insurance industry back in 2005, when meeting with insurers about HIV Life Insurance, that the UK should adopt the same principles as in other countries. My suggestions were met with looks of deep concern by all of the Life Insurance Companies present at those meetings at the Association of British Insurers.

Client Case Example, Stuart Aged 48. Company Director

Stuart approached me for Life Insurance because he had been declined by three leading insurers in quick succession earlier this year. He had found the application process to be both draining and disheartening, before he contacted myself and received specialist financial advice.

I was quickly able to establish that he was in fact insurable at the cheapest rates available in the market. He had simply been approaching the wrong type of insurers, ones where the criteria of the insurer was just way too strict for anyone to be accepted.

Declined For Cover? We Can Help !

The current situation with COVID 19 and Corona Virus means that there is an “Unusually” high number of people living with HIV being declined by Life Insurance Companies. During the pandemic we have been working hard to put in place an underwriting process that means all people with HIV are able to access Life Insurance in some form.

My views have not changed since 2005, everyone should be able to access some form of Life Insurance as a basic human right, to protect their mortgages debts and families. Keep checking back to my HIV & Insurance Column for more exciting news of “Life Insurance For All!”
